   LSC-VIRGO COLLABORATION MEETING, MARCH 17th-21st, 2014, NICE

TRAVEL

Traveling to and from Nice City

By plane : arrival at and departure from the French Riviera is Nice Cote d'Azur International  Airport ( NCE )

There are two terminals, called T1 and T2.

Buses nos 98 & 99 connect each Terminal of the Airport with Nice downtown for 6 EUR (buy the ticket in the bus or at the ticket office nearby)

The Bus 98 connect T1 and T2 to downtown. To Acropolis and old city, the best stop is Cathédrale vieille ville, at about 35 minutes from T2. Bus 98 departure from T1 and T2 about every 20 minutes. Last departures from airport terminals: 11:37 pm at T2, and 11:50 pm at T1.

The Nice Express bus 99  reach the railways central station Nice Ville in 15 minutes every 30 min to 1 hour. Its runs from 07:53 at T2 and 8:00 at T1, until 8:53 pm at T2 (9:00 pm at T1). From there, take the tram (the tram station is called Gare Thiers). The Acropolis Center is at 6  tram stations (direction Hôpital Pasteur) ; you will need a tram ticket (buy the ticket 1.5 Euro on the platform). After  9 pm, use the Bus 98.

If your flight is late arriving - after midnight -  a taxi is your best bet, if quite expensive.  You can walk to central Nice in a little over an hour - a safe and pleasant walk along the cycleway perimeter of the airport and then the curve of the Baie des Anges, if you dont have too heavy luggages!

By train, the central station is Nice Ville, dont stop at Nice Riquier or St Augustin other stations. From  Marseilles St Charles station to Nice, it takes 2:30. From Paris, fast  trains (TGV) take 5:30. Night train from Paris is  at about 9:15 pm from  Gare d'Austerlitz, and  arrives in Nice at about 8:45 am.

Use the tram: the nearest tram station is at about 200 m on the left-hand side when going out the railway station building. It is called Gare Thiers. The Acropolis conference center is at 15 min or 6 tram stations (station Acropolis) , direction Pasteur

The tram runs until midnight. TAXIS AT NIGHT ARE SERIOUSLY EXPENSIVE.

By car: from west  the most convenient A8 motorway exit is Promenade des Anglais. Then drive to the city center along the Baie des Anges. From  Monaco and Italy, exit at Nice Est. Then follow the direction Port  and take the expressway on the left bank of the river until the Acropolis and Nice center.

PARKING in Nice can be difficult. On the street the meters operate from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Near the old City are many Vinci garages. The fares are quite expensive. Trafic build-up in Nice center can be a serious problem.

Taxis on the Riviera drive you wherever you want, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. They are found expensive compared with some other places, and not always very easy to find. They are permitted to pick up passengers only from designated taxi stands. Far from theses stands  taxis can be reached by phone. There is a night rate from 7pm until 7am.

Taxis are a convenient way to reach Nice Center. We heard that taxi fares are regulated from the airport to Nice central: currently it is 30-35 euro, according to time of day, number of passengers and amount of luggage; ask the price to the cab driver before departure. Express buses achieve a similar result with much less expense.
